For the month of June, the City of Churches becomes the City of Cabaret!
Heaving with divas and leading ladies, sultry jazz and performance art exotica, the festival is a juggernaut of cabaret styles new and old. And it’s one more reason to chart your compass for the South Australian capital.
Known for its proximity to the renowned Adelaide Hills wine district, and its world-famed WOMADelaide, Writers’ and Fringe Festivals, Adelaide is a friendly and approachable hub. Priding itself on being the “20 minute city”, nearly everything you could want – beaches, cafes, parklands and the airport – is only a short car drive away.
Whether you want to visit the Southern Hemisphere’s only giant pandas at the Adelaide Zoo, or soak up some culture at the Art Gallery of South Australia, there’s an attraction for every taste. Sports-lovers will be drawn by the crowds’ roars at the beautiful Adelaide Oval, while Rundle Mall is a hotspot for shoppers keen to give their credit cards a work-out.
And come the wintry months, there’s a cabaret treat for every taste, too. This year’s Cabaret Festival is helmed by the legendary Kate Ceberano and features 411 artists in 161 performances over 18 days and nights. Of that staggering line-up of shows, there are 17 world premieres and seven Australian premieres. So you can truly say, you saw it there first.
Headliner Kristin Chenoweth of Wicked fame is enough to conjure the masses, but she’s not alone. Eighties icon Molly Ringwald, Grammy Award-winning jazz singer Cassandra Wilson, Tony Award-winning Idina Menzel, opera favourite Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Festival favourite Eddie Perfect round out a star-studded marquee.
The red carpet is rolled out on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend on the 7th June and will run until the 22nd June. Shake your tail feather and get booking.
