Fire up the barbie and buy some lamb chops – Australia Day will soon be upon us! This year it will be 20 years since all Australian states and territories began celebrating Australia Day on January 26th with a public holiday, so Aussies will be going all out in celebrating this beautiful nation of ours. Brisbane will be hosting a range of community events to help bring families and people together to make Australia Day in Brisbane a day to remember.
The Parklands, South Bank is home to Brisbane’s annual Australia Day Festival and is the epicentre of Australia Day celebrations in Brisbane. The festival begins at 10am with music, family entertainment and interactive art installations and culminates in a spectacular fireworks display. The beautiful grassy park land with shady trees and beautiful river views is the ideal place to throw your picnic blanket and enjoy the day’s festivities. The traditional flag raising ceremony where the Australian Defence Force raise the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags is patriotic and emotional and not to be missed.
For something a bit different, the Cultural Forecourt at South Bank is hosting Great Australian Bites, a celebration of the great Aussie BBQ. Running from 5pm to 9pm on Friday the 24th of January, Great Australian Bites includes food and entertainment with live cooking stations and a menu featuring local produce and scorching hot BBQs. You may learn a trick or two from one of the celebrated chefs to take to your own Australia Day barbie on the 26th. Tickets are limited so get in early and secure your spot.
Moreton Bay’s Fish, Fun and Aussie Sun festival is a free event for all the family with rides, free activities, entertainment, delicious food, market stalls and another spectacular fireworks display. Located at Suttons beach on Marine Parade, Redcliffe the food and market stalls open at 8am with the event program kicking off at 2pm.
