Just when you feel like you’ve finally recovered from the school holidays another one looms in the not too distant future. For those who live in or near Melbourne or those who are looking for somewhere to go during the school holidays we’ve found all the best things to do in Melbourne for kids.
Let’s start with the obvious choices such as an amusement park! The Wonderland Fun Park at the Harbourtown Docklands (a great place to do some outlet shopping while the kids amuse themselves at the fun park) has a selection of rides for all ages including dodgem cars, a mini roller coaster, bungee jump trampolines and the new walk on water balls – huge plastic blow up balls that you climb inside of and roll around on the water in! During the school holidays there is usually a children’s show scheduled and these upcoming school holidays it is an interactive live wildlife show called Wild Life Down Under. Right next door is the fabulous Icehouse, the largest ice sports and entertainment venue in Australia. The Icehouse offers a range of activities including free 15 minute learn to skate classes, come and try hockey, disco nights and teen only events. There are also arcade games and a cafe so everything you need for a day of fun is under the one roof.
For something a bit different and cheap try one of the fun, self- guided Australian Treasure Walks. There are five different walks to choose from around Melbourne. Download your booklet from the website for between $12 and $18, follow the clues and solve the puzzle. The kids will learn about the history of Melbourne while having fun and getting some exercise. The Appsolutely Melbourne iPhone App has a range of challenges that can be downloaded onto your phone with the added advantage of being able to compete for the best time with other app users and get your name on the leaderboard.
The Old Melbourne Gaol, Crime and Justice experience takes the kids back in time to the oldest gaol in Australia. Visitors get to experience being ‘arrested’ and locked up in a truly unique interactive experience. You can see where 135 people, including the infamous Ned Kelly, were hanged and see what it’s like being on trial in a real life courtroom. The kids will also love the Hangman’s Night Tour with its stories from the dark side, although this one isn’t recommended for kids under 12 years.
Melbourne’s first cake decorating cafe in North Melbourne, 123 Cake will be a huge hit with the kids and is also great for groups and parties. Drop in, choose a cake, decorate it and eat it! What kid wouldn’t like that? You can book a table for a group or just turn up and take your chances.
