I’ve always been a big believer in making a ‘Bucket List’; I think it’s great to have things to look forward to, aspire to and plan towards. This belief has lead to many a conversation on Bucket Lists and many an hour spent comparing the items on said lists. One thing that seems to be on a vast majority of lists is the desire to complete a marathon, half marathon or at least a fun run! And the Age Run Melbourne certainly fits into the latter two categories.
In its fifth year, the Age Run Melbourne is being held on Sunday the 21st of July with four different length races that can be entered. The first is the three kilometre Marvel Kids Run which is designed to get kids out there exercising together and having fun, the second is for the novice runner and is a five kilometre run/walk, the third, for the more experienced runner, is a 10 kilometre run and the last is the Brooks Half-Marathon which covers 21.1 kilometres and is only for the seriously fit.
The aim of the run is primarily to encourage people to participate in healthy living and fitness and of course to raise money. Over the past five years $4.7 million has been raised for charity and this year the aim is to raise $2.5 million. Participants can raise money for any cause close to their heart.
I love the whole concept of the Marvel Kids Run… created for kids aged 4 to 14, the 3 kilometre run takes kids from Alexandra Gardens around the banks of the Yarra, finishing at the main finishing line at Birrarung Marr. Kids aged 4 to 7 need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian while the older kids are encouraged to run on their own. The event is sponsored by Marvel with the first 1000 entrants receiving a free Marvel Super (hero) Bib…. so spectators can expect to be treated to a parade of passing superheros faster than the speed of light (although I think I’m getting my comics mixed up now).
More mature walkers and runners will love having the streets of Melbourne car free and all the courses incorporate a run along the Yarra and past many of Melbourne’s most famous attractions.
