Albury Wodonga is made up of two inland Australian towns nestled on either side of the New South Wales and Victorian border. Located on the shores of the mighty Murray River the twin towns are a surprise package as a holiday destination with an eclectic range of activities and attractions for all age groups and interests. As would be expected, river based activities are plentiful but you may not have expected to find stunning wineries, gourmet dining or a pub inspired by a cartoonist.
Choice Hotels has a great range of Albury Wodonga accommodation options to suit most budgets and needs.
Arts & Entertainment
A number of annual events are hosted by the twin towns, many based around the local country spirit and include things such as rodeos, horse races, musters and bush festivals but are not limited to these. There are also local and national sporting events and community events celebrating important days of the year. The towns are busy enough to attract some of the most popular Australian music acts on tour, and local galleries and museums host a range of exhibitions. The HotHouse Theatre is Victoria’s third largest professional theatre company and is widely acknowledged as Australia’s leading regional theatre company. The local Regent Cinemas house nine high tech cinemas including a Gold Class cinema that screens all the latest international and national movie releases.
Sport & Leisure
The Murray river is the epicentre of sporting and leisure activities in the Albury Wodonga region. Hire a houseboat for a few days and explore the nooks and crannies of Australia’s longest river. Throw a line overboard and try your luck catching a Murray Cod, which can grow to up to 1.8m in length and weigh a whopping 115kg. Kayaks and canoes are available to hire at different points along the river, and offer a unique way to explore the Murray and view the red earth cliffs that have been carved into the landscape by the flowing water. Waterskiing is another popular activity on the river and some of the accommodation in Albury and Wodonga caters specifically to skiers offering easy access to boat ramps. Horseback riding is also a favourite pastime in the area, and local companies offer a range of riding adventures ranging from short rides to day long rides, with experienced guides and horses for all levels of riders. For those a little more adventurous, helicopter tours of the area offer a birdseye view of the Murray and the surrounding area. A selection of nearby golf courses makes the region a playground for golf enthusiasts.
Wineries and Breweries
The Albury Wodonga area has a diverse range of soil types, altitudes, rainfall and temperatures and so is able to produce a wide variety of grape types under different conditions producing one of the most extensive ranges of wine styles in Australia. There are a large number of wineries and breweries in the region, many opening their cellar doors for wine tasting. The Rutherglen Winery Walkabout, in nearby Rutherglen, is a once a year event held over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, where 21 different wineries open their cellar doors to participate in this festival of wine and food. Each winery offers something a little different whether it be exclusive tastings of rare vintages, live music or special breakfasts and meals. Transport can be organised from your accommodation in Albury or Wodonga and shuttle buses running throughout the day are available to transport you between participating wineries.
As with most wine producing regions, gastronomy plays an important role in the region. Many of the wineries boast exceptional restaurants and cafes using the superb fresh local produce along with locally produced wines. The Albury Wodonga accommodation and hotels also have excellent eateries and independent restaurants and cafes are abundant. Local pubs, including the famous Ettamogah Pub inspired by a cartoon, offer good value pub style meals and great value clubs such as golf clubs and services clubs offer a number of reasonably priced choices including restaurants and even accommodation.
